Bruce Klunder (July 12, 1937-April 7, 1964) became aware of the civil rights movement when he was 18 years old. At the young age of 26, he lost his life fighting for that same cause.

The Reverend Bruce Klunder died protesting the construction of a segregated school in Cleveland, Ohio, in April of 1964. During the protest, several other activists used their bodies as blockades, throwing themselves on the ground to block a bulldozer’s path. Let's take a look back at what your archivists were doing in April, May, and June!

For the quarter, we brought in 201.32 cubic feet of new records in 97 groups. These included the records of 16 active and 50 dissolved PC(USA) congregations, for 88.74 cubic feet. Among these were major shipments from the Grace Presbytery, Hudson River Presbytery, and the Presbytery of Scioto Valley.

Organized in 1852, the Presbyterian Historical Society is the oldest denominational archives in the United States and serves as the national archives for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and its predecessor denominations. Since 2018, PHS has welcomed community college students into the archive to explore history and to use archival materials, spaces, and expertise to bolster research and critical-thinking skills.
