PHS awards four Heritage Microfilming Grants

The Presbyterian Historical Society is pleased to award 2013 Heritage Microfilming Grants to four PC(USA) congregations:

•Romulus Presbyterian Church (Romulus, N.Y.), founded in 1796

•First Presbyterian Church (Brighton, Colo.), founded in 1885

•First Presbyterian Church (Rushford, Minn.), founded in 1893

•Calvary Presbyterian Church (Alexandria, Va.), founded in 1948

Sustained this year by donations to our Annual Fund, the Heritage Microfilming Grants were established in 2001 in celebration of PHS's 150th anniversary. The $500.00...

Eugene Carson Blake arrested, July 4, 1963

July 4, 2013

Police were in place to meet the men who meant to go to jail. On July 4, 1963, the stated clerk of the UPCUSA, Eugene Carson Blake, was jailed in Baltimore, Md. for trespassing. Along with 283 activists from the Council on Racial Equality and the Baltimore Clergymen's Interfaith Committee, Blake had challenged the owners of Gwynn Oak Amusement Park to desegregate. The church had cameras rolling, and a 16mm film, with some of Blake's speeches on civil rights dubbed over it, was widely distributed. You can see PHS's copy below.
