Portrait of John Wanamaker by W.J.W. McLernon. Oil on canvas, 1905. From the collections at PHS.

“And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd” (Mathew 9:35-36). In this scripture lies the essence of charity and the motivation of our good works, and we here at PHS are passionate about helping those whose lives are fragmented and disheveled.

When we look out on the streets of Philadelphia, we see many that are hungry and in need of a helping hand. Like Jesus we are moved with compassion to help meet those needs. With this in mind, we are launching our annual Canned Food Drive. This year the recipient of our collected food items will be the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission located at 302 N 13th Street in Philadelphia, PA. The mission is making great strides in our community by feeding homeless men three meals a day. One of the founding fathers of the mission was a Presbyterian businessman by the name of John Wanamaker. It is exciting that 135 years later his vision continues to live in the hearts of men and women today! If you would like to participate in our Canned Food Drive, Quincina Jackson would be happy to assist.
