PHS Welcomes New Senior Co-Editor

August 24, 2023

Dr. Heath W. Carter is the new senior co-editor of The Journal of Presbyterian History. Carter, associate professor of American Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary, will work alongside Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS) Executive Director Nancy J. Taylor in overseeing The Journal, which PHS has published since 1901.

“I am thrilled to be joining The Journal’s team,” Carter said. “I believe that this history matters, not only for academic conversation but also for audiences far beyond. The truth is that stories about how we got here provide essential context for discussion and debate about faithful ways forward into the future.”

Carter succeeds Rev. Dr. James H. Moorhead, who retired in June after 27 years as one of The Journal’s editors.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Jim on The Journal,” Taylor said. “We both think Heath is a great choice as the next senior co-editor. And, I am glad The Journal will continue to connect PHS and Princeton Theological Seminary.”

The Journal of Presbyterian History is published twice a year in paper and digital form. All back issues of The Journal, with the exception of the last year, are available online through JSTOR. The next issue in print will be Fall/Winter 2023.

“As we move forward,” Carter said, “I’m excited to use The Journal as a platform for illustrating the ongoing vitality of church history, while also swinging wide the door to new ways of telling the story of the Presbyterian and wider Protestant past.”
