Biographical Note / Administrative History

Administrative History

On July 18, 1902 the Young People's Missionary Movement was formed at Silver Bay, New York. As the scope of this organization's work grew to include children and older adults, a change of name was felt to be necessary. In 1911 it became the Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada.

In February 1919 the Movement, without undergoing any fundamental revision of its charter, became the Missionary Education Department of the Interchurch World Movement. However, when the Interchurch World Movement collapsed in 1920, the Movement again became independent and in January 1921 was reorganized so that financial support came from cooperating denominational boards.

The purpose of the Movement was "to serve as a cooperative organization in which denominational home and foreign mission boards, departments of missionary education, boards of Christian education, and other agencies responsible for missionary education in the United States and Canada unite to publish missionary education materials, hold training schools and conferences, and carry on any other activities, which may be decided upon to further the cause of missionary education and carry out the desires of the constituent boards and agencies."

The Movement, under the imprint of Friendship Press (adopted in 1926), planned, published, and promoted general books, reading books, study books, handbooks on principles and methods for leaders, program and discussion guides, and visual aids for adults, youth, and children. It also planned and directed interdenominational conferences for the training of leaders in missionary education in local churches.

In 1902 C.V. Vickrey was elected general secretary of the Young People's Missionary Movement. Harry W. Hicks was general secretary of the Movement from 1909 to 1918. He was succeeded by Ernest F. Hall, who served from 1918 to 1919 and was in turn succeeded by Miles Fisher who was general secretary from 1919 to 1921. Franklin D. Cogswell was general secretary of the Movement from 1921 to 1950. Gilbert Q. LeSourd served as associate secretary from 1920 to 1950.

In 1950 the Movement became a part of the National Council of Churches with its activities being assumed by the Joint Commission on Missionary Education of the Division of Christian Education.

Collection Overview

The Missionary Education Movement of the United States and Canada, 1901-1952, files date primarily from 1905 to 1950. The files are those of Franklin D. Cogswell, general secretary, and Gilbert Q. LeSourd, associate secretary.

The files are arranged alphabetically by name of organization or subject. Items within the files are arranged chronologically by year, month, and day. Partially dated material is placed at the end of the month or year; undated material is placed after all dated material. Enclosures are placed after their letter of transmittal.

The files consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, minutes, agenda, annual reports, bylaws, financial statements, budgets, sales reports, bills, legal documents, pamphlets, leaflets, songbooks, and catalogs.

The bulk of the files consist of minutes, agenda, and reports of the various governing and subject committees of the Movement. There is also a number of files of publication records and reports. Items from the various conferences conducted by the Movement are also found in the files.

Processing Information

The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America were processed in 1980-1984 through two grants awarded to the Presbyterian Historical Society by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Work under the first grant was performed by Dr. Alan Thomson and under the second grant by Donald L. Haggerty.

The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America have been dated from 1950 to 1972; however, there is material dating from before and after this time period. Documents from the predecessor organizations date from as early as 1839. There is also a small amount of material found in the files from as late as 1975. The year 1972 was selected as a cutoff date for the archives because of the major reorganization which the NCC underwent at this time. The archives are arranged in the following record groups:
