Maintenance Custodian

Basic Commitment: This position calls for a basic commitment to the mission of the Presbyterian Historical Society, the Office of the General Assembly, and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as well as a commitment to continue to dismantle white supremacy, sexism and racism in the Office of the General Assembly and the PC(U.S.A.). The position fosters collaboration, innovation and openness with colleagues, constituents and the wider church.

Purpose of the Position: Maintain the cleanliness of all areas of the PHS building and maintain the grounds; assist in opening and closing the building; assist with building maintenance tasks; assist in responding to any emergency situations involving equipment malfunctions and alarms during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. Actively participate in building team meetings to discuss a variety of building-related topics. Reports to: Associate for Finance and Building Operations

Budget Accountability: none

Requested Hours Worked: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7 hours per day with flexibility to cover opening and closing of building, occasional evening and weekend hours, and to assist in responding to alarms.

Responsibilities (in order of importance, the essential responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to):

  1. Maintain restrooms, public areas, and staff work areas and meeting rooms by collecting trash and recycling and cleaning as prescribed in the Maintenance Operations Manual.
  2. Maintain collection storage areas through dusting and other cleaning tasks as prescribed in the Maintenance Operations Manual.
  3. Maintain grounds including mowing lawns, weeding, watering, trimming shrubs, leaf removal, removal of any debris from parking lots, salting and/or snow removal from pathways, steps, and driveways; keeps equipment in clean and safe operable condition.
  4. Assist Building Superintendent with general maintenance activities, facility inspections in process of daily work, assist with special building projects, and assist with receiving and overseeing vendors.
  5. Assist with opening and closing the building. Sets and disarms fire and security alarms as needed.
  6. Support office staff by receiving shipments and deliveries.
  7. Maintain and order building supplies (cleaning items, light bulbs etc.)
  8. Assist with setup and breakdown for special projects and events.
  9. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Office of the General Assembly.

Education: High School graduate or GED

Skills, Experience, and Competencies: 2-4 years of building maintenance experience; skill in a variety of custodian and floor care tasks; experience in safely operating a variety of custodial equipment; detail oriented, good time management skills; good communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to work in a consultative and collaborative style. Demonstrated commitment to value differences and the benefits to be derived from working with a broad range of people. Ability to effectively manage interpersonal relationships. Able to use current technology and equipment.

Sensory or Physical Requirements: Ability to operate equipment necessary to carry out maintenance activities (floor buffer, vacuum, lawn mower, trimmers, snow blower, etc.); ability to climb ladders, bend, crouch, and carry objects up to 35 pounds and lift objects up to 50 pounds; ability to work outside in all types of weather and on-call for building emergencies.

Desired Skills:

  1. Institutional housekeeping experience in a commercial, office, library, or church setting.
  2. Have a deep understanding and commitment to cultural and racial ethnic inclusiveness. Values diverse groups, ethnicities, genders, communities, cultural constituencies, and points of view. Able to relate well to people from all walks of life and of varying theological perspectives.
  3. Ability to speak one or more languages other than English very helpful.
