Philadephia, Third, Scots, and Mariners (Old Pine) Presbyterian Church

According to the Historical Directory of Presbyterian Churches and Presbyteries of Greater Philadelphia, by Kenneth A. Hammonds (Philadelphia: PHS, 1993), Third Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, (“Old Pine Street”) was organized in 1768 as a collegiate congregation to First Presbyterian Church and shared a board of trustees. In 1953, Third Presbyterian Church merged with Holland-Scots Presbyterian Church to become Third and Scots Presbyterian Church. The Holland-Scots congregation was the result of the mergers of seven earlier congregations, beginning with Scots Presbyterian Church.

According to the Historical Directory of Presbyterian Churches and Presbyteries of Greater Philadelphia, by Kenneth A. Hammonds (Philadelphia: PHS, 1993), Scots Presbyterian Church had its roots in Associate Presbyterian (“Seceders”) Church of Philadelphia, organized in 1768. In 1770, the congregation divided into “Burgher” and “Antiburgher” factions, and in 1779, the Antiburgher faction was separately incorporated as Scots Presbyterian Church. The congregation joined the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church when it was organized in 1782 and was known officially as First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. In 1822, the parent denomination merged with the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., and the church became officially Eighth Presbyterian Church, although it was still known popularly as Scots Church. The congregation officially changed its name to Scots Presbyterian Church in 1844. Records from this congregation have been deposited with the society. Because the records of Scots Presbyterian Church eventually incorporated the records of several other congregations, some records of the merged congregations appear in volumes cataloged under the names of the earlier churches. Scots Presbyterian Church received by merger Atonement-South Presbyterian Church in 1910. This congregation was the result of a merger between Cedar Street (South Street) Presbyterian Church (organized 1838)—after 1881 known as the Presbyterian Church of the Atonement—and South Presbyterian Church (organized 1849) in 1906.
