Biographical Note / Administrative History

Biographical Note

Four generations of the Converse family owned and operated the religious newspaper Christian Observer—commencing with Amasa Converse in 1827, when he took charge of the Visitor and Telegraph newspaper of Richmond, Virginia. Through a series of mergers with other newspaper enterprises and relocations to Philadelphia, Richmond, and Louisville, over the next several decades, the paper became the largest circulating Presbyterian weekly in the United States.

Amasa Converse was born in Lyme, New Hampshire in 1795. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1822. After Dartmouth, he taught briefly at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, Massachusetts, and then entered Princeton Theological Seminary in December 1823. Due to ill health, Amasa left Princeton in December 1824 for the warmer climate of Virginia. There he opened a school, pursued ministerial work, and was commissioned by the Young Men's Missionary Society of Richmond to be their home missionary. On May 7, 1826, Amasa was ordained an evangelist by the Presbytery of Hanover. In late 1826, when he was considering leaving the ministry for another field of work, Amasa was solicited to take editorial charge of a religious newspaper and magazine published in Richmond, Virginia.

In February 1827, Amasa Converse commenced his editorial work with the Visitor and Telegraph and the Literary and Evangelical Magazine. After purchasing both publications in July 1828, he suspended publication of the magazine at the close of the year to focus his efforts on increasing and extending the circulation of his weekly religious newspaper. Circulation increased from over 1,000 subscribers in December 1828 to 3,000 in 1831.

During the decade of 1827 to 1837, there were increasing theological and institutional tensions within the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. In 1837, the "Old School" party of the General Assembly abrogated the 1801 Plan of Union and expelled four largely "New School" synods from the denomination, precipitating a bitter thirty year national division of the Church. Amasa Converse thought the decision unjust and took a public stand against it. Although he was able to sustain his newspaper during this period, he accepted overtures made in late 1838 to move the paper (then under the name Southern Religious Telegraph) from Richmond to Philadelphia. In January 1839, he moved north and merged the Southern Religious Telegraph with the Philadelphia Observer (established in 1813 under the name Religious Remembrancer). In 1840, Amasa's publication became the Christian Observer.

The Civil War proved to be another turning point in the history of the Christian Observer. Amasa Converse and his partners in Philadelphia were in disagreement over the war, particularly how the war was to be represented in the paper. Having southern sympathies, Amasa generally found himself an unwelcome minority in the city. In 1861, after the suppression of his paper by the federal government, Amasa moved the publication office to Richmond, Virginia. In 1869, the Christian Observer merged with the Free Christian Commonwealth in Louisville, Kentucky. After Amasa's death in December 1872, the Christian Observer remained based in Louisville. The January 6, 1875 edition announced that the paper's firm name had changed from A. and F. B. Converse to Converse and Company. The Converse family continued to own and operate the Christian Observer until it ceased publication with the issue of January 21, 1976.

Amasa Converse married Flavia Booth (1804-1885) in December 1828. They had five children who lived to adulthood. Their eldest son, Francis Bartlett Converse, born in Richmond, Virginia in 1836, moved with the family to Philadelphia in 1839. He graduated from Central High School in 1853, the University of Pennsylvania in 1856, and he attended Princeton Theological Seminary from 1859 to 1860. He joined his father in the newspaper business as associate editor of the Christian Observer in January 1858. After the death of Amasa in December 1872, Francis served as editor until his death in 1907. From 1872 to 1879, his brother the Reverend James B. Converse (1844-1914) was associated with him in the editorship and, from 1879 to 1904, his brother the Reverend Thomas Edward Converse (1841-1913).

Francis Bartlett Converse married Ellen Elizabeth Pollard in May 1866. They had six children together: Francis (Frank) Bartlett Converse, Jr.; Harry P. (Pollard) Converse, T. Edward Converse, Bernard T. Converse, Mary Peachy Converse, and Ellen E. Converse. Harry, born in 1876, joined the Christian Observer staff after graduating from Princeton University in 1899, and was managing editor from 1907 until his death in 1960. That year, his daughter, Marys A. (Austin) Converse (1918-1985), a 1939 graduate of Vassar College, became managing editor. Harry's brother, Francis (Frank) born in 1870, established the firm Frank B. Converse and Company and manufactured the Converse Typesetting Machine, which he invented.

Collection Overview

The Converse Family Papers, 1837-1979, contain correspondence, financial and legal records, photographs, printed matter, and other materials that document the personal and professional lives of Amasa Converse, Francis Bartlett Converse, Harry P. Converse, and, to a far lesser extent, Marys A. Converse—the dynasty that published America's oldest religious weekly, the Christian Observer, for almost 149 years. The collection is particularly rich in material documenting the operations of the Christian Observer from the mid-1800s to its closure in 1976.

The Converse Family Papers provide insight for researchers interested in the history of religious publications in America. The collection contains materials describing the owners' fluctuating economic fortunes during the depressions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as long-time readers' outpouring of sympathy and sorrow upon the paper's termination in January 1976.

The collection is divided into four series: "Amasa Converse papers," "Francis Bartlett Converse papers," "Harry P. Converse papers," and "Christian Observer and Converse and Company records."

The "Amasa Converse papers, 1837-1846 and undated" series contains an autobiography, autobiographical and genealogical materials, a portrait of Converse, and letters written by Converse to William Hill (1769-1852), a prominent nineteenth century Presbyterian churchman. In the undated handwritten autobiography that carries his life up to 1861, Converse reflects on his work as a newspaper editor as well as larger political and religious issues, such as the Old School-New School division in the Presbyterian Church and slavery. Other materials related to Amasa Converse, including correspondence, can be found in the "Christian Observer and Converse and Company records" series. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.

The "Francis Bartlett Converse papers, 1838-1867" series contains an account book, two diaries, diplomas, a photograph, and general printed matter. The diaries, from 1864 and 1866 to 1867, contain a young Converse's reflections on his life and work as a Presbyterian minister and newspaper editor with the Christian Observer. Other materials related to Francis Bartlett Converse, including correspondence, can be found in the "Christian Observer and Converse and Company records" series. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.

The "Harry P. Converse papers, 1892-1909" series contains a scrapbook, yearbook, pictorial publication, and journal related to Converse's Princeton University college career and early professional life. Other materials related to Harry P. Converse, including correspondence, can be found in the "Christian Observer and Converse and Company records" series. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically.

The "Christian Observer and Converse and Company records, 1854-1979" series contains correspondence, financial and legal records, reports and meeting records, photographs, and other materials documenting both the day-to-day and the overall operation of the Christian Observer and its parent corporation, Converse and Company. However, some of the materials in the family business records do not appear to have any clear connection to the businesses.

This series contains five subseries: "Reports and meetings," "Correspondence," "Financial and legal records," "Photographs," and "Other records."

The "Reports and meetings, 1877-1962" subseries consists of annual reports, minutes, proxy forms, meeting notices, and related correspondence. The bulk of the material documents the stockholders' and directors' meetings of Converse and Company. Also included are the company's annual financial reports. Materials in this subseries are arranged chronologically.

The "Correspondence, 1855-1979" subseries contains letters to and from individuals and groups connected to the Christian Observer. Multiple generations of the Converse family are represented in these materials. Of particular interest is the voluminous correspondence regarding the closing of the Christian Observer in 1976; the letters contain expressions of gratitude from readers and descriptions of the paper's impact on generations of Presbyterians. Moreover, many of the letters include personal narratives that document the experiences of "everyday" Presbyterians in the mid-to-late twentieth century.

The "Financial and legal records, 1854-1976" subseries includes account books, balance sheets, circulation statistics, contracts, deeds, receipts, stock certificates, and family estate records that document the finances, financial transactions, and legal agreements of the Christian Observer and Converse and Company. These materials are arranged alphabetically.

The "Photographs, 1887-1927" subseries contains photographic prints depicting members of the Converse family as well as the physical plant of the Christian Observer office in Louisville, Kentucky. Prints show the exterior of the building in 1887, the printing press room, and the linotype room. Photographic portraits are of Amasa Converse, Frances Bartlett Converse, and Harry P. Converse. Materials in this subseries are arranged alphabetically.

The "Other records, 1856-1976" subseries consists of articles, building floor plans, a business policy manual, supply inventories, clippings, printed matter, and other materials related to the operation of the Christian Observer and Converse and Company. The business policy manual documents the managerial, financial, and editorial philosophies that guided the administration of the Christian Observer during the 1940s and 1950s. Also included are anniversary issues of the Christian Observer that feature a brief history of the religious publication and the Converse family's ownership and publication of the newspaper. Materials in this subseries are arranged alphabetically.
