Biographical Note / Administrative History

Administrative History

Mariners' Presbyterian Church was established in 1819 by Joseph Eastburn, though the church was not formally organized by the Presbytery of Philadelphia until 1830. Until it was destroyed by a fire in 1963, the church ministered to sailors as well as to the city's poor and indigent in conjunction with the Seamen's and Landsmen's Aid Society. In 1965, Mariners' merged with the Third and Scots Presbyterian Church; the resulting Third, Scots and Mariners' Presbyterian Church, better known as Old Pine Street Church, still stands at 412 Pine Street.

This collection contains miscellaneous items dealing with the development and growth of the Mariners' Church. Because of the diverse nature of this collection, no attempt was made to establish a series. Included in this collection are items dealing with the church's history. These include membership lists, visitor's registers, financial records, reports and items concerning the conflict between the Mariners' Church and the Redevelopment Authority.
