Biographical Note / Administrative History

Administrative History

The Council on Theological Education began in 1941 as the Special Committee on Theological Education. In 1943, acting on the recommendations of this committee, the General Assembly (PCUSA) created the Council on Theological Education. Its purposes were: to provide a continuous effort to recruit qualified candidates for the ministry of the Church; to provide seminaries adequate for training those candidates and schools equipped to train lay workers; to study and work toward a solution of the problems of theological education. The Council was governed by the General Assembly, which periodically modified and redefined the aims of the Council.

This collection is comprised primarily of the records of the UPCUSA's Council on Theological Education. However, some records of the PCUSA created prior to 1958 are also included.

The arranged order of this record group reflects provenance with regard to major subject areas, but materials within these "areas" were subject to imposed order where necessary. Provenance was respected for scattered groups of files having no special affinity to the major subject areas.
