Guide to the Ashbel Green Papers

Ashbel Green was born in Hanover, NJ in 1762. He served in the New Jersey Militia during the American Revolution and in 1782 he entered the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) as a junior. He graduated the following year and in 1785 he became a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy. He studied for the ministry under John Witherspoon and in 1787 he was called to the Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.

From 1792-1800 Green held the post of chaplain to the Congress of the United States. He was Stated Clerk of the General Assembly from 1790-1803. In 1812 he returned to Princeton as president of the university, a position he held until 1822. During these years he was instrumental in the founding and administration of the Princeton Theological Seminary. During 1824 he was General Assembly moderator. He died in Philadelphia in 1848.
