Visiting Researchers and Remote Users

If You Visit

Researchers at MontreatThere is a $5.00 per day user fee, but church members and agency staff using their own materials, and visitors to our museums and reading rooms may do so free of charge. While we work to maintain a dependable schedule, we are sometimes closed to the public on days other than legal holidays. It is wise to call ahead before coming to be sure you wonĂt be disappointed.

Visitors to our two offices will be asked to register each day. We ask our researchers to complete a registration form which acquaints them with our access policies. We ask our researchers to bring only the papers they need into our reading rooms and to use pencils, not pens, to take notes. We permit laptop computers.

  • For the complete text of the rules governing the use of our materials, see Access

We can arrange for a limited number of copies, if the condition of the materials will permit it. We do not permit the use of scanners, cameras, or digital cameras on our materials.

If You Cannot Visit

The Presbyterian Historical Society does not lend its materials, and does not participate in the Interlibrary Loan program. In certain exceptional cases, we can photocopy some materials at your expense and send them to you. These cases are covered in our copying policy.

Many remote researchers send friends, family, or professional colleagues to do their research for them. Our offices keep lists of local researchers who are familiar with our collections who may contract to do specific research for you for a fee. (Please note that we are not responsible for private research agreements.) Many of the "Tips for Success" will be useful to you in any large history collection you may chose to visit.

Some sections of our collections have been microfilmed, and are commercially available for purchase, or might be borrowed from circulating libraries through interlibrary loan.

  • Many Presbyterian local church records have been microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah. The originals of some of these records may be with us, but many are not. Only the GSU will be able to determine if they have film copies of the records for which you are looking. See our page of genealogy resources for additional information.

We do offer one research service through the mail for a fixed fee.
