Access and Reference Services for Reseachers Access
Our materials are frequently rare or unique. Some materials are restricted, which means you may need special permission to use them. Some collections are fragile, which means you may be asked to use microfilm copies of the originals. Some materials are not yet available. All materials except basic reference works are in closed stacks and must be retrieved for you.
Reference Services
Our staff will be happy to review your topic with you by phone or through the mail, and we will send you some copies of catalogue and finding aid materials if that will help you once you arrive. For some suggestions for solving some common research problems see "Tips for Success." If your research topic is large or complex, it will be useful to write to us before you come so that we can explore your subject with you ahead of time. Frequently there is information which you can discover which will make you time with us more productive. You will also have time to secure permissions from the proper agencies, if necessary. (See "Access," above.)
