Melanchthon portraitIn 1518 Melanchthon became a professor of Greek at Wittenberg, where he influenced and was influenced by Martin Luther. In 1521, Melanchthon found himself at the head of the Reformation Movement while Luther was confined in the Wartburg. He sided firmly with Luther firmly against the Zwinglians in the controversy on Eucharistic doctrine in 1525-36.

Melanchthon was the chief architect of the Augsburg Confession (1530). Subsequently, however, he went to great lengths to unite the Reformed and Roman Catholic churches.
