Church and Community: The Berean Enterprise

« Previous | Next »

To fill a void in the Northwest section of Philadelphia, Lombard Central Presbyterian Church started the Gloucester Mission in 1877. The arrival of Matthew Anderson brought growth to the mission. In 1880, the Presbytery of Philadelphia Central organized the Berean Presbyterian Church. Through persistent fund-raising by Anderson, the church and manse were built on South College Avenue. Services commenced in November 1884 with 26 members. By 1893, there were 101 communicants and 188 attending the Sabbath School. At its 100th anniversary, Berean’s membership was at 632. Today, Berean Presbyterian Church ministers to the needs of the community from their second home at Broad and Diamond Streets.
