View of Seoul from the Great East Gate, 1893. The Korean capital was then described as "an overgrown village of 30,000 one-story houses" surrounded by a wall. When missionary Linnie Davis first arrived in 1892, the gates had been closed for the night and she had to be hoisted over the wall with a rope.
