Foreign Missionary Index

Database Index to Foreign Missionary Personnel Files (RG 360)

This database indexes the foreign missionary personnel files held by the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia. The personnel files document foreign missionaries who served from the 1880s through the present, although most of the files document missionaries who served “Northern stream” Presbyterian denominations before 1983.

Personnel files maintained by the following denominations are included:

  • the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA),
  • the United Presbyterian Church of North America (UPCNA),
  • the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A (UPCUSA), and
  • the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
You may search the database by:
  • name,
  • type of service (i.e. medical, educational),
  • field of service (i.e. Africa, Zaire), and
  • gender
The database record for each individual includes a small amount of biographical and service information.

Content of the personnel files indexed by the database varies. Files may contain missionary application forms, “Candidate Reference Blanks,” “Missionary Profiles,” school records, photographs, incoming and outgoing correspondence, medical and financial records, obituaries, and/or other printed material. Presbyterian Historical Society staff may add new material to these files as it is received.

Due to the denomination's access policy and personal privacy issues, some medical, educational, or personnel records found in the files of living persons may be restricted. Staff will review the contents and may remove certain records before providing access to the files.

For information on our Biographical Sketch Service which provides photocopies of biographical information from these files, visit http://www.history.pcusa.org/famhist/bio_ref.html.
